Step 1: Deh Shuddhi Snan
Ceremonial bathing with sacred Gangajal and holy water to purify the physical body.
Step 2: Chandan Lepan
Applying fragrant sandalwood paste, gopi chandan, and sacred tilak to the forehead.
Step 3: Tulsi & Gangajal
Placing holy Tulsi leaf, gold foil particle, and Ganga water into the mouth for spiritual passage.
Step 4: Arthi Nirman
Constructing the sacred bamboo bier with natural coir ropes and consecrated white/red cloth.
Step 5: Shava Pinda & Bandhan
Offering the initial rice-ball (pinda) and tying the body respectfully to the arthi.
Step 6: Antim Yatra (Swarg Rath)
The solemn procession to the crematorium led by the Karta bearing the earthen fire pot.
Step 7: Vishram Pinda
Mid-journey resting rite offering prayers to the guardians of the four cardinal directions.
Step 8: Crematorium Slot & NOC
Municipal crematorium registration, token allotment, and verification of medical death pass.
Step 9: Chita Nirman
Arranging consecrated firewood or electric furnace entry with cow ghee, camphor, and samagri.
Step 10: Karta Pradakshina
Circumambulating the pyre anti-clockwise with a punctured earthen water urn (Kumbha).
Step 11: Mukhagni & Kapal Kriya
Igniting the sacred flame at the head with Vedic mantras to dissolve the soul into the 5 elements.
Step 12: Ghat Bhedan
Breaking the clay kumbha behind the back without looking back to sever all physical attachments.
Step 13: Tilanjali & Shuddhi Snan
Mourners offering water with black sesame seeds followed by a purification bath before entering home.
Step 14: Asthi Sanchay Vidhi
Collecting mortal remains and bone fragments on the 3rd morning in a consecrated copper urn.
Step 15: Sacred Asthi Visarjan
Immersion of ashes in holy waters: Ganga (Haridwar/Varanasi), Godavari (Nashik), or Banganga (Mumbai).
Step 16: 10th to 13th Day Terahvin
Dashgatra, Sapindikarana, Terahvin Puja, and Brahmin Bhojan transitioning the soul to Pitru Loka.
